Chi-Me Physical Activity Pilot in Berkshire
20 September 2023
In Berkshire we are currently piloting Chi-Me physical activity courses. Chi-Me is a Tai Chi influenced exercise programme which is simple to follow and accessible for ages 18 years and abilities. Chi Me improves leg strength, assists efficient breathing, reduces the risk of falls, and promotes mental wellbeing. It’s perfect for anyone with arthritis or a musculoskeletal (MSK) condition.
Our Regional Officer for the South East, along with a Versus Arthritis volunteer completed the first Chi-Me taster course in Reading during July. The course was four weeks long and had 12 people with arthritis or MSK conditions attending. Each session included peer support at the end of the session for people to get to know each other.
All the participants will be coming back in October to complete an eight week course. The positive effects felt by this class after just four weeks have been unbelievable:
‘I feel with regular repetition of the flowing movements and distributing weight correctly, this will not only strengthen my muscles but will also assist with balance.’
‘I’ve seen the progress from not being able to stand for the first session without a chair, to standing unaided except for an occasional wobble.’
In the Autumn four courses will run across Berkshire (Reading, Woodley, Twyford, Maidenhead) by our trained volunteer instructors.
If you have any patients who may benefit from attending one of our Chi-me courses, please refer them to our website where they can find more information and register for classes.
