Versus Arthritis Statement
15 November 2024Tracey Loftis, head of Policy and Public Affairs:
“Whilst there has been progress in reducing elective waiting times, we are very disappointed to see the September target to eliminate waits of over 65 weeks for elective treatment has been missed in England.
“Trauma and orthopaedics, which includes those waiting for joint replacement surgery, has consistently been the largest single cohort of cases waiting for treatment in England and has reached a staggering one million cases across the UK.
“We are particularly concerned as we move deeper into winter. During times of increased pressure on the NHS, elective treatment such as surgery are cancelled. People with arthritis are often at the sharp end of this crisis, facing further delays to the crucial treatment they need, which can impact across all aspects of daily life.
“In England’s upcoming NHS ten-year plan, it is imperative that people with arthritis are not forgotten; we want to see arthritis prioritised.”
