What are the aims of this research?

Why is this research important?

Previous research commissioned by Versus Arthritis to seek patients' opinions of their wrist supports highlighted problems including hygiene issues, difficulty in putting them on, discomfort and poor appearance. In spite of these problems, 90% of patients reported benefits of wearing these supports and would recommend their use to other patients. An improved design will address these issues.

The design of the new splint will be tested in a laboratory to ensure that they adequately support the wrist. It will then be compared with other available splints by people without wrist problems. If this is successful, a focus group will be conducted with patients with wrist arthritis to see what they think of the new splint.

How will the findings benefit patients?

This research will lead to the production of a new, well designed wrist support for use by patients with wrist problems. There will be a direct benefit to healthcare professionals who are responsible for prescribing and fitting these supports as they will be better informed to make more appropriate decisions.
